Adult Classes & Workshops

Please call us (403-995-7706) or drop in to the store if you like to register for a class or workshop. If a class is full, we will gladly place you on the waiting list for that class. We often get cancellations. We suggest you don’t wait too long to register since classes often fill up fast.

Supply lists will be available before the class or workshop. Most supply lists (in pdf format) may be downloaded; just click on the link below the class description. If you need to purchase supplies, we recommend you do so in advance of the class or workshop rather than on the day of the class or workshop. If you wish, let us know what you need and we can set it aside for you.

Many of our adult workshops would be great for teens.

Full payment is required to register for a class or workshop. Registrations are taken at the store or over the phone with credit card.

Students may join at any time provided there is room.

Classes must have a minimum enrollment.

There are no classes on statutory holidays.

The drawing component includes the elements and principles of design. Students learn to become proficient at drawing and sketching using pencils, inks, charcoal, pastels both chalk and oil, and conté. The painting component is also based on the elements and principles of art and design and includes color theory.

We  provide private lessons at an hourly rate. Contact us for more information.

Discover the materials and techniques of each medium with guidance from your instructor. Classes are semi-structured with lots of freedom to experiment. Samples of projects or teachers’ works are displayed in store. GST and supplies are not included in fees.

Oil Paints – Please note that only odorless solvents for oils are permitted into classroom due to health regulations.

Art Your Way

Dynamic Drawing

Discover realistic and imaginative drawing styles while you choose the subject matter. This class is great for beginners as well as for more experienced drawers. Ashley will work with you at your skill level and help you to develop your unique style while using the elements and principles of art and design. Learn techniques in the drawing mediums of your choice while creating images that inspire you. Adult/Teen level.

Dynamic Drawing  – Pen & Ink


Create dynamic detail in pen & ink using a repertoire of lines and mark-making techniques. Ashley will guide you to sketch a variety of subjects including landscapes, animals and portraits. Then learn to apply an ink wash to your drawing to add value and watercolor pencil for effective color. This class is ideal for those interested in travel journaling and those who want to develop an illustrative art style. Adult/Teen level.

Abstract Grounds in Acrylics

Create unique and innovative abstract grounds while exploring a broader understanding of color harmonies. This workshop will focus on the versatility of acrylics, abstract painting techniques, color and composition. Abstract GroundsYou will learn to develop layered abstracts grounds that can be used as backgrounds for paintings or can continue to be developed into more dynamic abstracts. Discover how to use texture, lifting techniques, washes, glazes, stenciling and antiquing to add depth and create dimension in your paintings. Ashley will guide you to use simple imagery and different gels and pastes to bring your paintings to life.

Create a spring painting with Virgini Senden in bold strokes with little blending, defined values and shapes. These captivating tulip paintings are set amongst bold and loose backgrounds.

Class Policies

Full payment is required to register for a class or workshop. Cash, debit, MasterCard or Visa are acceptable. Sorry, we do not accept cheques.

If there are insufficient paid registrations and we have to cancel a class, you will be notified and you will receive a full refund.

Should there be room in a class already in progress, new students are welcome to join. Fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Fees for classes and workshops missed because of any event beyond our control (such as travel, road conditions, illness, weather or emergencies) cannot be refunded or credited to another class.

Paintworks cannot provide replacement or make-up classes for classes missed.

If a teacher is not available, a replacement teacher will be obtained or arrangements will be made for a make-up class.

Cancellations must occur at least two weeks prior to the date your class starts to receive a refund. After that, you will receive a refund only if your spot can be filled by another person. We will do our utmost to fill the vacancy.

If a student needs to withdraw from a class after it has started, a partial fee will be refunded only if there is someone on our waiting list. If a student knows of someone else who may want the class, they may take over that spot in the class.

Refunds will incur a $20.00 administration charge, which will be deducted from the refund amount. Students may choose a store credit for the whole amount instead. Those notified about a class cancellation will receive a full refund.

A supply list will be available about ten days prior to your class. Most supply lists are available on our web site.

Students are responsible for supplies, surfaces and paper towels or as recommended on the supply list for the specific class registered for.

• Students are responsible for their own clean up. Please do not pour acrylic and oil paints down the sinks.

Classes will start on time.

Paintworks reserves the right to adjust the class schedule, adjust fees, cancel a class or modify a class at any time.

Paintworks, its employees, and other staff will not be held responsible for any losses, stolen property or personal injury that may occur while students are attending lessons.

Paintworks is not responsible for work left in the studio. If work remains in our studio two months after a class or workshop is completed, it will be disposed of.

Students receive a 15% discount on framing (supplies only).
